Science Museum Sun Sculpture

About This Project

The Science Museum’s Sun Sculpture spanned the 12m-wide atrium with five coloured rays, each comprising 25 custom cotton ropes. The rays are attached to the building via bespoke steel brackets installed up to 18.5m above the floor.

I worked closely with artists Sam Jacob Studio to turn an artistic vision into a feasible design. Together with Sam Jacob studio, I pitched the concept to the Science Museum. Later, IĀ used FEA to reduce the weight of the custom bracketry. I also led the materials research and carried out destructive tension and flammability testing.
